HISTORY OF THE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Springfield Armory was established in Springfield, Massachusetts, by the U.S. Congress in 1794 and had an illustrious history. Initially starting with smoothbore muskets, they soon moved on to rifles, with the Armory producing more than 840 000 rifled muskets in .58 calibre between 1858 and 1865. After the American Civil War (1861-1865), it became clear that the way forward was to adopt a self-contained metallic cartridge. From 1865 to 1873, the Armory experimented with different ways of converting muzzle-loading muskets into breech-loading rifles. Erskine Allin, then master armourer at Springfield Armory, was given the task of designing a method of conversion. NUUSBROKKIES | NEWS SNIPPETSSKOUE Covid-19 het sy tol op vele terreine geëis. Behalwe die kansellasie van HuntEx weens die verbod op publieke byeenkomste, het dit ’n amper onvoorsiene nagevolg gehad. Wêreldwye aanbodkettings, veral die vervoerketting, was en is nog steeds nie dieselfde nie. Vervoerpryse het die hoogte ingeskiet (dis nou ás jy ’n skip kon kry wat dryfmiddel en ammunisie sal vervoer...). Dit het ’n beduidende impak op verlede jaar se Hunt-Ex-skou gehad. Tog was Hunt-Ex2022 volgens my steeds ’n groot sukses. In 2022 was voorraad in terme van gewere, herlaaikomponente, ammunisie, en dies meer, uiters beperk. PIRATED COPIES Over the past few years, pirated copies of SA JAGTER/ HUNTER have been circulated regularly via social media, mostly as a PDF document on WhatsApp. The most recent case was the Jan/Feb 2023 edition. We would like to draw readers’ attention to the fact this is in contravention of the Copyright Act (Act 98 of 1978) and that a breach is punishable with a jail sentence. The act also allows for the publisher to claim civil damages from the transgressor/s for damages suffered. We appeal to our readers not to commit such an offence, even though it may seem harmless to just forward a PDF document to your hunting and shooting friends. HUNTING STORY In part 1, I shared the story of how my tracker, Ben, and I had tracked down and come face to face with a rogue hippo we had been asked to remove from Kyle National Park in the then Rhodesia. Having squeezed the dart gun’s trigger, we were waiting for what would come next… The silencer worked a charm – there wasn’t so much as a “smut” as the dart left the barrel. We saw a flash of the dart fletches in the torchlight as the dart struck home and stuck. The hippo instantly jumped to its feet and spun around to face me. Then it stopped dead. I didn’t move. HUNTING HERITAGE In the April 2016 edition of SA JAGTER/HUNTER, I wrote an article titled “Hunting – Of fathers and sons” in which I told the story and journey of raising and teaching a young boy to hunt. In the last paragraph, I mentioned I had a daughter, Chane, who was also interested in hunting and, at the time, started joining her brother and me in the veld with her BB rifle. She was only three years old then but showed a keen interest in hunting and being out in the bush. This is her story. Chane accompanied her brother and me in the hunting fields, where we would do feathered hunts on a nearby farm. In the beginning, she would just sit and watch, but as her interest grew,…

Die skietkaptein (dink grondeienaar – en moenie dwarstrek nie, want jy wil graag weer genooi word) het honde oënskynlik nie mooi verstaan nie. Ook nie die interaksie tussen honde en wildemakoue nie, en nóg minder dat ’n springerspanjoel se agterstewe maar lekker kan woel. Die fênsie Britte vertel hulle spanjoele sit mooi rustig en wag asof hulle bloedfamilie van “optelhonde” is. Jammer, dis my woord vir apporteerhonde. Ek bedoel niks leliks of fieliesagtig daarmee nie. Wie praat in elk geval van “apporteer”? Hy het Polka snaaks begluur en ek moes maar die halsband uithaal. Sy moes stilsit – die kaptein was adamant. Tot die eerste ganse hulle opwagting gemaak het en hy kon sien hoe die klein hondjie ’n wildemakou gaan uitswem en ingesleep het. Miskien het sy hart vermurwe.…
