There are people you meet who make you think, “I’d better start doing something with my life.” Capt. Oscar Amoroso was one of those guys. He was a U.S. Navy pilot in a submarine torpedo squadron, and among his memories was surviving a crash on an aircraft carrier. When he wanted to fish the deepwater Northeast canyons in the 1960s, he converted his gas-powered, 36-foot Klein to diesels to get there. He owned a family-run construction company. He was a father of six. And in a small community of captains who chase giant bluefin tuna, he was the man. FOR AT LEAST 15 YEARS, two things have frustrated Ben Rivera: cellphones and security. Both have made it harder for people to carry his multitools, first when he was the engineer in charge of product development and now that he’s president of Leatherman Tool Group. Cellphones took over the spaces on belts and in pockets where a multi tool used to be, and since 9/11, security guards have been wary of them. These issues were in the back of Rivera’s mind when he took his family to Disneyland and got stopped by security guards who wanted to take his Skeletool. The world is full of hidden treasures, many of which are discovered, restored and preserved for all to enjoy. Sadly, however, some objects are left to fall into ruin or have otherwise been forgotten. David Olson is one of the guardians of cherished artifacts others have left to disintegrate. “Over the last 25 years or so, I have bought and restored more than 30 classic wooden boats,” said Olson, who lives in Tiburon, California, when he is not at his Lake Tahoe home.
