YACHT enthusiasts at the boat shows in Miami this past February saw the U.S. debut of the first motoryachts by Sirena Marine, longtime builder of sailing yachts in Turkey. The entry-level model was the Sirena 56; her big sister was the yacht in the photo at left, the Sirena 64. Frers Naval Architecture & Engineering handled exterior design while Design Studio Spadolini did the interiors. The builder says the Sirena 64 is 20 percent more fuel efficient than competing models at her cruising speed of 16 knots. At an eco-friendly speed of 10 knots, the yacht has a reported fuel consumption of less than 13 gph and a range of about 1,000 nautical miles. SOME BUILDERS MAKE vessels that could be tenders. Others concentrate on the tender market. Novurania is the latter. More than 60 years ago, the builder started by manufacturing inflatable bridges for the military. Novurania soon realized its rubber-coated-fabric technology worked well for rigid-bottom inflatable boats. In 1989, Novurania of America started building fiberglass hulls and joined them with Hypalon tubes to create the trademark aesthetic seen today. The builder’s Chase 31, one of five models from 19 to 38 feet length overall in the Chase series, has a deep-V hull for slicing chop. Power comes from twin 250 hp outboards, twin 260 hp Yanmar diesels with ZT drives or a single 370 hp Volvo Penta D4 diesel. T HIS PAST SEPTEMBER, WHEN TROPICAL Storm Hermine smacked into the Southeast U.S. coast, the city of Beaufort, South Carolina, suffered some damage. About a month later, when Hurricane Matthew rammed the city even harder, the wreckage was far more substantial. As of late January, some marinas were still working to rebuild, trying to get ready for the first transient boaters to arrive right about the time you read this. “Several marinas were affected,” says Ryan Salley, general manager at Port Royal Landing Marina. “We expect to be ready to go by the transient season. One of this year’s most interesting launches will never make it to production. The Lexus 42 Sport Yacht was designed by Lexus in Tokyo and built by Marquis Yachts in Wisconsin. “There’s never been the same level of complexity on another yacht this size,” says Josh Delforge, vice president of design at Marquis. “Take the electronics. There are touchscreens everywhere. You find the same systems on a custom superyacht.” The all-carbon-fiber hull is 40 percent lighter than a similar-size boat, he says, and the build involved a level of precision the boatbuilding industry has rarely, if ever, seen. CLASSIC CRAFT FOR THE AVID YACHTSMAN T he azimut 62s was a certifiable hit for the Italian builder. Since 2005, 80 of them have been built and sold. Several of these included an “Italia” version, which upgraded the original version’s twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels to 1,150 hp motors. Our test 62S was equipped with the former, and she hit a top-end of 34 knots on test day. Belowdecks: The first version of this yacht included a two-stateroom, two-head setup: a forepeak VIP and an amidships master. This layout opened up space to port for a second salon and media center. SHE WAS RESTING QUAYSIDE at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Positioned in profile, she appeared familiar, yet I couldn’t peg the builder. Her sharp exterior lines held my gaze. I needed to know who she was. The Adler Suprema is a new-tomarket 76-footer with carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass construction, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and a proprietary ship-monitoring setup. I soon discovered why she looked familiar. The near omnipresent Italian design firm Nuvolari-Lenard penned the Suprema’s plumb bow, crisp sheer line and aggressively raked superstructure, as well as her interior. This firm has drawn an array of wellknown production, semicustom and custom craft. Seas were 5 to 10 feet with an occasional 15-footer, and the 600-foot cargo ship was in position, attempting to create a breakwater. Kaiser tried to bring his 67-foot Discovery Tilly Mint alongside Dove II, a 56-foot sloop that had lost her rudder two days earlier. ¶ But as Tilly Mint neared, the yachts both rolled. TECHNIC ALEX PERTISE FROM THOSE IN THE KNOW Spend enough time on the water, and the odds are excellent you’ll find yourself aboard for a less-than-lovely delivery trip. I remember one particularly hot, humid and utterly miserable ride down Long Island Sound following a Downeast cruise.
