THE EMAIL’S SUBJECT LINE READ: “Good times.” Attached was a picture of myself and three friends, 10 years younger, with wide grins, sitting bar-side in West End, Grand Bahama. Less-than-full adult beverages accented the photo. (Perhaps the inspiration behind the grins.) I smiled at the picture while recalling one of the most memorable trips of my 18-year marine career. YACHT enthusiasts at the boat shows in Miami this past February saw the U.S. debut of the first motoryachts by Sirena Marine, longtime builder of sailing yachts in Turkey. The entry-level model was the Sirena 56; her big sister was the yacht in the photo at left, the Sirena 64. Frers Naval Architecture & Engineering handled exterior design while Design Studio Spadolini did the interiors. The builder says the Sirena 64 is 20 percent more fuel efficient than competing models at her cruising speed of 16 knots. At an eco-friendly speed of 10 knots, the yacht has a reported fuel consumption of less than 13 gph and a range of about 1,000 nautical miles. YACHT DESIGN has come a long way since Yachting started 110 years ago, but two common threads weave the sport’s past and present together: purpose and passion among enthusiasts. There’s no shortage of passion in the Clarks; they spent six months of the year cruising on the Ohio River. Nor were they short on purpose. Their cruising activities included ravine exploration, docking and dining at barges turned restaurants, and anchoring alongside the boats of friends. SHE WAS RESTING QUAYSIDE at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Positioned in profile, she appeared familiar, yet I couldn’t peg the builder. Her sharp exterior lines held my gaze. I needed to know who she was. The Adler Suprema is a new-tomarket 76-footer with carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass construction, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and a proprietary ship-monitoring setup. I soon discovered why she looked familiar. The near omnipresent Italian design firm Nuvolari-Lenard penned the Suprema’s plumb bow, crisp sheer line and aggressively raked superstructure, as well as her interior. This firm has drawn an array of wellknown production, semicustom and custom craft.
