I am sitting at winemaker Joško Gravner’s living room table in Oslavia, Friuli Venezia Giulia. He is seated at the head of the table to my left. Opposite me are the other characters of my story: Mateja, Joško’s daughter, and Gregor, Mateja’s son. Holding a glass in my hands, I have just drunk their Ribolla Gialla, made with Oslavia’s native vine par excellence. The name of Piedmont, a region in the northwest of Italy, firstly evokes the famous Barolo and Barbaresco, as well as the Nebbiolo grape variety. But Piedmont also has an ancient tradition of producing sparkling wine - it was here, in the middle of the 19th century, that the first Italian sparkling wine was produced, obtained by a method of second fermentation in the bottle (i.e. by the traditional method, method classic, or metodo classico). Today, thanks to the Consorzio Alta Langa, founded in 2001, this tradition is being reborn and the sparkling wines of the region are becoming reknown. There is great excitement in Abruzzo! Known for being a miniature Italy, with sea and mountains just a few kilometers away. Rich in biodiversity, the landscape it gives us back is exceptional. Incredible microclimates that have prompted the region to map out its production boundaries to perimeter the tastes of the places and tell a clearer identity of the entire territory, which covers 33,000 hectares of vineyards (17,000 of which are dedicated to the production of Montepulciano). The producers’ desire is to increase the value and no longer be considered the land of volumes.
