Last August, the sun streamed down over mountaintops onto a milky blue alpine lake. My best friend and I waded into the frigid water of Wedgemount Lake, atop one of the toughest trails near Whistler, British Columbia, an 8-mile excursion with an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet. We scrambled up rocky terrain, wandered through lush coniferous forests, and shrieked as we plunged into the shockingly cold lake water. We threw our hands up in the air with abandon, breathed in the fresh air, and drank in the once-in-a-lifetime views. In recent years, I’ve begun seeking out adventures like this—expeditions in nature that test how far my determination and perseverance can take me. That’s what led me to run a half-marathon in Vancouver a few days before the hike, or…
Arlo Essential Indoor Wired Security Camera ($59.99) “My wife and I recently bought a pair of Arlo Essential Indoor cameras. We mainly got them so we can keep an eye on our cats when we’re out. We also chose Arlo specifically because of their commitment to privacy and cybersecurity. The cameras have a privacy shield, which automatically covers the lens when the cameras are in Standby mode, so you know when you’re being watched.” - Rhett Intriago, Feature Writer Normal Gossip Podcast (Free) “Gossip is my guilty pleasure, and this podcast is such a fun way to indulge. Instead of talking about your own social circle or speculating on celebrities, this show takes user-submitted anonymous stories and delivers them in a humorous and tantalizing way. ‘Normal’ is a bit…
FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD? Americans Have a Hard Time Remembering Their Apple ID Passwords While regularly resetting passwords can be a good safety practice, it’s frustrating when it happens because you constantly forget your logins. According to a study by password manager NordPass, Americans struggle most to remember their Apple ID passwords. While countries like Canada and the UK share this struggle, other parts of the world have more difficulty remembering their Google or Windows passwords. This could be because we put the most complicated passwords on our most important accounts, but either way, it’s good to invest in a password manager. MEMORY BOOST Put Down Your Smartphone for Better Cognitive Function If you feel like your iPhone isn’t doing your brain any favors, you might be right. According to…

I ’d never enjoyed wearing a watch—I didn’t like how it felt on my wrist. However, the idea of a wearable computer intrigued me, so in 2016 I bought an Apple Watch Series 2. I tried it for a few days and ended up reselling it. In 2019, hearing of the health benefits, I bought the Series 5. That watch met the same fate. Recently, I decided to go all in and buy the big-screen Apple Watch Ultra 2 and commit to wearing it for two weeks. I chose the large screen, longer battery life, brighter, waterproof, dust-resistant, more expensive Ultra 2 to give the Apple Watch its best chance. The Ultra 2 is targeted for adventurers. At 75 years old, I enjoy hiking and swimming but am probably not…
When it comes to the iPhone, I’ve always been happy with the base model. In fact, when Apple started producing mini versions of the iPhone, those were the ones I gravitated towards. I have had a 13 mini since it was released and would have happily held onto it for another few years. However, this year, I decided to take a risk and pick up the new iPhone 15 Pro. Here are my thoughts. SMOOTH DESIGN, BORING COLORS From a design standpoint, the iPhone 15 Pro looks almost identical to the iPhone 14 Pro, with some minor differences. The edges of the 14 Pro are flat, ending in 90-degree angles, whereas the 15 Pro subtly curves downward, making the edges of the device feel smoother. The back glass is a…
