Have you ever driven down one of those roads that seems to get narrower and narrower without warning and with nowhere to do a three-point (or even nine-point!) turn? It’s always a bad sign when grass starts growing in the middle, like a central reservation to which only cyclists can stay to one side. I even remember trying to thread an A-class through a French village on an (unsignposted) market day. I think the man who had to move his stall slightly to one side to let us through saw the funny side. Maybe. The point is that wide vehicles offer more room on site but they can also restrict you on the road. The German manufacturers have long offered ‘Van’ models that mix low-profile coachbuilt benefits with easier driving,…
Facelifted Fiat is coming Fiat has released further details of the Series 10 Ducato, which we first announced in the February issue. The new van range boasts electric powertrains, a different exterior design, new connectivity systems and next generation ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems). Fiat Professional has long had a significant presence in the leisure world and the company says that campervans continue to represent, “a strategic asset for the brand,” having established itself as a cornerstone of the recreational vehicle market. The new Ducato builds on a history going back to 1981 and sales in 80 countries worldwide. The latest version maintains its best-in-class cargo load capacity of up to 17m3 and payload of up 2,315kg for the diesel versions. Diesel engines will have a six-speed manual gearbox paired…
IT’S FESTIVAL TIME! World famous DJ, Chris Moyles, is set to head to Campervan Campout at Ardingly in Sussex on Saturday 4 May as part of his 90s Hangover live tour. His appearance will headline year two of the Campervan Campout festival, which also sees 15 other live bands perform, such as The Killerz, Hot Red Chillis and Onside Brit Pop. Open to both campers and day ticketholders, the event will host a main stage with live music, a Wellness Sanctuary sponsored by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, a shopping village, family zone sponsored by the Camping & Caravanning Club, and an artisan food and drink hall. Then there’s the Campout Hub – the place to go to listen to a selection of bloggers, vloggers and podcasters sharing their experiences…
THE Excel name returned this season on a new line-up of slimline low-profiles (2.24m wide), based on the Ford Transit. This 620G is the smallest model. Starting at £61,634, it’s one of Auto-Trail’s most affordable ’vans – and one of its most contemporary-looking. It’s not just about aesthetics, though, with practical touches like a low entrance step, opening overcab sunroof, external shower and a lithium leisure battery. We particularly like the choice of five cab colours, including this Chrome Blue. While those paint options are at no extra cost, you do need to budget for the two options packs. The Lux Pack (£1,578) adds the 9.5in touchscreen with sat-nav and colour reversing camera, as well as an external barbecue point, TV aerial, Omnivent two-way fan, solar panel, carpets and an…
SLIMLINE motorhomes are on the up. Both Bailey and Auto-Trail have launched new ranges into this sector this season, along with French firm, Pilote, while Adria’s Compact is well established in the market and Rapido’s C Series enters its third model year. But, of those with a transverse rear bed, most are closer to six metres than seven. This new Alora instead goes longer for more living space. Then, while parallel – or face-to-face – lounge areas have started to dominate in ‘full-width’ coachbuilts, it’s still the half-dinette that is more usually seen in narrow-bodied ’vans. Not here. Bailey has installed the more open-plan style of seating, as well as having listened to early criticism of the fixed table, replacing that for production models with a free-standing unit that can…
