A friend is considering buying his first motorhome (with a sizeable budget) and one of the first things he told me was ‘I want an A-class’. Having seen the reaction you get when pulling up on site in an A-class motorhome, I can see where he’s coming from. With no commercial vehicle element to the exterior styling, they look more prestigious, more like a leisure vehicle. Then there’s the thought of sitting behind that panoramic windscreen in a full-width cab, which feels very different to sitting in a van. There’s something very special about driving through the Alps in an A-class. Of course, there’s a premium to pay for an A-class (compared with an equivalent-spec low-profile) and they’re not for everyone. There has never been much choice of British-built options…
WATCH THE VIDEO motorhome.ma/avalon Avalon is a brand-new range for Elddis, sitting above the Autoquest and compact Accordo as the marque’s flagship. It is described as the first step in the redesign of the whole portfolio, using a new system of motorhome body construction. You can spot the new motorhomes instantly, especially if viewed from the front. The overcab window is the largest it was possible to fit, with its edgeless design being likened to Apple products. With prices starting at £85k, Elddis wanted the Avalon to stand out as a premium vehicle on any campsite. Equally, Elddis has addressed the look of the tail end of these new models, with every aspect designed-in – so bike rack mountings and the reversing camera are fully integrated, not afterthoughts. It’s a…
AN A-class is often seen as the type of motorhome you aspire to, something you’ll perhaps purchase as your third or fourth ’van as you move upmarket, having gained experience with conventional coachbuilts. But that’s not always the case and there’s no reason you can’t jump in with an A-class as your first ’van if you know it’s what you want. After all, an A-class need not be any bigger than a low-profile and it doesn’t need to cost the national debt of a small country; new they start at under £80k, while you might find an older used model for half, or even a quarter, of that. If you’re buying new, reckon on a £10-15k premium for an A-class over an equivalent low-profile from the same maker. First, though,…
BÜRSTNER has been building A-class motorhomes since 1996 and currently offers two integrated motorhome ranges – the Lyseo I Harmony Line and the company’s flagship, the Elegance. Lyseo is Fiat-based with a 4,400kg gross weight, while the larger Elegance uses a Mercedes Sprinter six-wheeler chassis with a 5,500kg MTPLM. LYSEO I Described as encapsulating elegance and functionality, the Lyseo I offers layouts for both couples and families with lengths from 6.98m to 7.36m. It features an extra-large windscreen for optimum driver vision and a greater feeling of living space, while, inside, the wide aisle, headroom of 1.98m and a generous washroom ensure that you have plenty of room on your travels. With Fiat’s 180hp motor and eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, the Lyseo I is ready for any tour, whether…

Unlike the company’s other A-class models, it is based on a Mercedes chassis rather than a Fiat Ducato. Initial models are left-hand drive only but right-hand drive versions are expected to debut at this autumn’s NEC show. There are two models – IL726EF with twin beds (each 1.96m) and the slightly longer IL726QF with an island bed. Here, we’re focusing on the former, which is 7.47m long. The Integra Line GT takes Eura Mobil into a premium…
DARK allure, pure elegance – immodest words, perhaps, but then this is a Hymer A-class we’re talking about and a special edition version at that. And those are the initial phrases on the subject from its maker, who goes on to describe the BlackLine as “our most elegant equipment package ever.” Of course, the basis here is the B-Class ModernComfort range which uses the front-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with Hymer’s SLC chassis. There’s a low-profile ‘T’ version, too, but here we’re focusing on the ‘I’ or A-class range. There’s more than a hint in the name but you’ll be able to spot a BlackLine from a standard B-MC model because of its black detailing on a Crystal- Silver metallic body. So, there are bold new graphics, in schwarz, as well…
