I write this as the Christmas decorations have just come down, “Auld Lang Syne” has been sung, and the credit card bills for all the seasonal (over-) expenditure will soon be rolling in. But the start of a new year always has a bit of optimism to it, too, and excitingly it’s time to start planning your big trips for 2025. I already have some great plans taking shape in the diary and I hope you do, too. Will 2025 also mean new year, new’van? If that’s your thinking, there’s a varied selection for you to mull over in this issue. I’m looking further ahead and wondering about the new models we’ll see at the NEC in February and what trends will be revealed in future vehicles. There’s a smattering…
Laika launches Mercedes-based Kreos Laika’s flagship Kreos was launched to much acclaim for the 2023 model year, based on the Fiat Ducato. Known for its avantgarde Italian design, this stylish low-profile motorhome has since been followed by an A-class version and, now there’s a Mercedes model, too. The new Sprinter-based model, the Kreos L 5009 MB, has the same standout features as its Fiat sisters but comes with the 170hp Mercedes engine, front-wheel drive and 9G automatic transmission. The key difference is that the habitation floor is extended into the cab for better heat distribution, complete with a two-speed booster fan in the cab. The new Kreos’ cab is packed with features, including the Tempmatic semi-automatic air-conditioning system and the MBUX multimedia display that includes phone integration (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto).…
Volkswagen is to offer its new Multivan-based California campervan with a plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive version. The PHEV produces a power output of 245hp and comprises a four-cylinder 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with an electric motor on the front axle and a second electric drive on the rear axle. The two electric motors are powered by a new lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 19.7kWh – providing an electric driving range of up to 91km (56 miles). No UK prices have yet been announced for the PHEV version, which is one of the very few hybrid campervans currently on sale.…
A campervan converter specialising in electric and hybrid vehicles has gone into liquidation, sparking fears that customers could lose out financially. Campers Scotland Ltd, based near Falkirk, traded under the CampervanCo and Eco Campers names. Confirmation that liquidators have been appointed was posted on the CampervanCo website on Christmas Eve. There had previously been unconfirmed reports of the closure of the business and a Facebook group was set up by concerned customers. Many customers have reported of campervans being in for work or servicing, or having paid deposits, with some expecting to collect these new campers in December. CampervanCo CEO, Gary Hayes, had recently announced the launch of a new hybrid campervan costing under £20,000 based on a pre-owned, grey import Toyota Hybrid Estima MPV. The firm introduced its first…

A POP-TOP roof on a coachbuilt motorhome? Nobody does, that, surely? Well, yes, Auto-Trail does, with such an option being added to the Excel range for the 2025 season. Like most things in the motorhome world, it has been done before. The first-ever Rapido motorhome had a pop-top, although, like the Eriba’vans of the period, it was there to add standing room, and reduce overall height when driving. Neat, just like the Knaus Tourer CUV, much more recently. See, nothing is ever that new… Auto-Trail hasn’t produced a super-low motorhome, though. Here, as with its Expedition 67 and 68 campervans, the roof is an optional extra that you can add to a standard model to give it an extra couple of berths. In fact, it’s the very same pop-top, which…
